Qualcomm Inc. has created receivers for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (Brew) compatible with MP3.com Inc.’s Music InterOperating System. Using the system, owners of music CDs will be able to stream their registered CD audio from MP3.com to ordinary cell phones. Initially, streaming will be available only at low quality “LoFi” data rates, but “HiFi” will come with faster wireless speeds. Enabled cell phones will, however, be able to download HiFi data into memory for playback. By year’s end, the system is scheduled to be available through some wireless networks in the US, Japan and Korea with others following.
