Metalheads Are Healthier Than You Think

So many people back in the eighties crusaded against heavy metal, thinking it was dangerous for kids to listen to. Well, we all know better by now, and a scientific study even tell us that metalheads may have turned out much better than many would have expected.

Pacific Standard and Blabbermouth.net tell us that this study, lead by a Humboldt psychologist, has looked at groupies, fans and bands at middle age, and according to the results of this poll that “the ‘metalhead’ identity served as a protective factor against negative outcomes. They were significantly happier in their youth and better adjusted currently than either middle-aged or current college-age youth comparison groups.”

As a card-carrying metalhead for over thirty years now, I know it’s always been a very healthy release for me, and if I had kids, I would never be concerned about them listening to metal, because I’ve always felt the music is a great outlet for your anger.

And as this study accurately points out, “Despite the challenges of adverse childhood events, and other stressful and risky events in their youth,” metal fans had “reported higher levels of youthful happiness” than kids with other musical tastes. “Social support is a crucial protector factor for troubled youth. Fans and musicians alike felt a kindship in the metal community…”
