With MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) technology now offering an alternative solution, traditional condenser microphones in mobile phones and other high-volume, digital communications and multimedia devices could become a thing of the past. Knowles Acoustics (formerly Emkay Innovative Products), a division of Knowles Electronics, began mass production of a surface mount microphone, produced using semiconductor manufacturing technology, in December 2002. Called the SiSonic, this silicon-based microphone is currently shipping in a variety of devices. It will be included in new mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital voice recorders, headsets, MP3 player/recorders, camcorders and digital still cameras (DSCs). Devices are scheduled to reach the market in the third quarter.
