Broadcom switch chip shaves cost of Ethernet ports

A switching chip from Broadcom Corp. is expected to cut the per-port cost of a 10-Gbit Ethernet switching platform from several thousand dollars to a few hundred. “Broadcom’s BCM5673 will enable switching systems that pack multiple 10-Gbit Ethernet pipes into a 1U card for about $300 per port, said Martin Lund, senior director of the Enterprise Switch Business Unit at Broadcom (Irvine, Calif.).”
