BMW will soon be starting to roll out a fleet of 500 Minis with electric engines. The car is driven by a 201 hp electric engine which are powered by 5000 lithium-ion batteries. There is enough juice to keep the Mini E going for about 155 miles. The maximum speed is limited to 95 mph; the 0-60 mph acceleration performance is about 8.5 seconds, BMW said.
More than 10,000 people registered to receive one of the electric Minis, despite its relatively high price tag: BMW charges a monthly lease rate of $850. BMW said mass production of the Mini E will begin sometime between 2010 and 2015.
