Market research firm Comscore released surprising numbers about iPhone purchases. While 43% of iPhone owners earn more than $100,000 per year, the device is seeing its strongest growth rates among those earning between $25,000 and $50,000 per year. The growth in this group was 48% in June of 2008, which was three times the growth that the iPhone saw in the $100,000+ group.
The numbers are somewhat surprising as the iPhoen will cost at least $70 per month in carrier fees per month, and up to $100 per month including taxes in some areas, which would suggest that only consumers with lots of disposable income are buying the device. However, Comscore believes that some may actually use the device to save money: “One actually realizes cost savings when the device is used in lieu of multiple digital devices and services, transforming the iPhone from a luxury item to a practical communication and entertainment tool.”
