China tops global Internet user-base at end of June 2008

  • The number of Internet surfers in China grew to an estimated 252.9 million as of the end of June 2008, surpassing the US for the first time to become the largest among all countries, according to the latest semiannual survey conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). The number of Internet surfers increased by 56.2% on year and was equivalent to a penetration rate of 19.1% – still lower than the global average of 21.1%, CNNIC indicated.
