San Fernando (CA) - NASA's Aqua satellite captured powerful images of the California wildfires yesterday using their Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). These images show a clear trail of smoke extending out over the Pacific Ocean, and the full extent of the areas affected. According to NASA the areas shown in red (see slideshow) around the Los Angeles metropolitan area represent places where fire was detected.
According to the National Interagency Fire Center's daily situation report, at the time of these photos the fires around San Fernando were 20% contained, having consumed 8,000 acres. The Freeway Fire has 5% contained, having consumed 5,800 acres.
The images show both a wide view and close-up view of the area in southern California, as well as Los Angeles. Scales are shown in 50km and 25km. See extremely high resolution images at NASA's website.
