San Mateo (CA) – oDesk, a web service that connects companies with freelance developers said that it has seen a sharp increase in demand for iPhone developers. In fact, the firm claims that Apple may have created “a whole new marketplace” by itself.

The company said that requests for iPhone programming jobs has “skyrocketed by 500%” over the past six months. To keep that number in perspective, the demand for iPhone-focused developers was minimal at 30 listings per month on oDesk’s website. However, the firm says that it now sees about 140 postings per month. Similar websites have also seen an increase in iPhone development projects: For example, Guru.com currently lists 42 iPhone projects as being available at the time of this writing.

The typical iPhone-related job is usually looking iPhone App Developers, iPhone SDK Engineers, and other iPhone programming and consulting jobs, according to oDesk.   

iPhone application and their availability on the AppStore have created interest among developers due to reports that a successful application can almost instantly create wealth for a developer. Apple said that more than 200 million applications have been downloaded so far and more than $30 million in sales were recorded during the first month after AppStore launch.
