Micron puts iron into single chip microdisplay

US firm Micron said that has released a microdisplay panel and it's all just on one single chip.

The panel is a wide screen quarter VGA microdisplay aimed at head mounted displays and embedded cell phone projectors. The chip uses ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon (FLCOS) technology. It only uses 85 milliwatts and is an addition to Micron's panel line which already includes other panels, technology acquired from Displaytech.

The microdisplays have fast switching speeds with a claimed 100 times performance gain over LCOS technology. This allows field sequential color which gives, said Micron, full color on each individual pixel and switching red, green and blue frames in sequence.

Micron has a fuller description of how the technology works, here.
