Intel phases out 130 nm Itanium 2, Xeon 7000 series
Santa Clara (CA) – Intel sent out a notification that it has started a discontinuance program Madison 9M Itanium processors as well as Xeon 7000-series MP processors.
According to a product change notification, both processor families are phased out as “market demand has shifted to higher performance” processors. Customers interested in the Xeon 7000-series with the 90 nm Paxville and 65 nm Tulsa dual-cores or the Itanium 2 with the 130 nm Madison 9M single-core will have to put their orders in by November 16 of this year. Intel plans to ship the last boxed Xeon 7000 and Itanium 2 Madison 9M processors on February 16, 2008. Tray versions of the processors are expected to be available until May 21, 2010.
Intel plans to launch new generations of the Xeon MP and Itanium CPUs later this year.
The Core-based 65 nm Tigerton dual- and quad-core processor will replace the current Xeon MP 7000 series, which is Intel’s last product family to use the Netburst micro-architecture. Tigerton is scheduled to launch in Q3 and will almost immediately replace the Xeon 7000 series, which currently includes the 70xx series based on the 90 nm Paxville MP core (2.66 – 3 GHz; 2 or 4 MB L2 cache) and the 71xx series based on the 65 nm Tulsa core (2.5 – 3.5 GHz; 4, 8 or 16 MB L3 cache).
Removing Madison 9M from the product portfolio has been somewhat overdue: Offered only as a single-core processor with clock-speeds of 1.5, 1.6 and 1.66 GHz and L2 cache sizes ranging from 3 MB to 9 MB, the CPUs lack every advanced processor technology developed by Intel in recent times. Hyperthreading, demand-based switching, virtualization and cache safe technologies are not available in this CPU generation.
A new Itanium processor is due at the end of this year: Code-named Montvale, the new CPU will offer an enhanced 90 nm Montecito core, while the 65 nm Tukwila 4-/8-core processor is expected to debut in 2008. Tukwila will introduce Intel’s Common System Interface, which will align the Itanium with the Xeon processor series.
