Las Vegas (NV) - Apple today unveiled its first major update of the Mac-specific Final Cut Studio video editing suite.

Final Cut Studio 2 includes Final Cut Pro 6, Mation 3, Soundtrack Pro 2, and Compressor 3.  The all-in-one videographer software package gives users tools for animation, sound editing, and creation and editing of HD video.  Final Cut Pro 6 uses Apple's Prores 422 encoding format, which Apple says can create uncompressed high definition video at compressed file sizes.

In addition, Apple today introduced Final Cut Server, a new addition to the Final Cut library that is aimed at broadcasting professionals to provide media asset management and workflow automation.

Final Cut Studio 2 is headed for a May release with a retail price of around $1300.  Owners of a previous version of Final Cut Studio will be able to upgrade for about $500, and those with just Final Cut Pro can upgrade to the new suite for around $700.
