US Military to shoot router into space
Culver City (CA) - Cisco and Intelsat General will be placing a router of sorts into space. The satellite will take data traffic from satellites and beam it to other satellites. The project is being done in conjunction with the Department of Defense and promised faster response times for ground controllers.
Traditionally traffic to and from satellites had to be beamed to ground control stations first, but this satellite could reduce the round-trip times significantly by keeping the communications in space. The satellite is due to launch in 2009.
