Santa Clara (CA) – Sun today introduced a new member in its Netra server family: For the first time, the company offers an AMD Opteron CPU in a carrier-grade blade-server.
The Netra X4200 M2 is built in a 2U, 20” form factor and is NEBS Level 3-certified. The device can be equipped with up to four 146 GB SAS hard drives, up to two Opteron 2214 HE (2.2 GHz, 68W) processors and up to eight DDR2-667 memory modules for a total capacity of 32 GB.
As other current Opteron Rev-F offerings, the Netra X4200 M2 will be upgradeable to AMD’s Barcelona quad-core processor, which Sun says will be available in this product either late this year or early 2008. Intel processors are on the Sun roadmap, but the company declined to specify when the Netra line will be available with processor from the blue team.
Prices for the Netra X4200 M2 start at $9845. Features such as a second processor, additional hard drives, more memory as well as a 10 Gb networking card will elevate the price significantly. Sun said that the new servers will be available for online order beginning in May of this year.
