Xperia X10 updated to Android 2.3

The rest of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia line has kind of been brushed aside since the Xperia Play was announced, but make no mistake that they’re still on everyone’s radar.

Sony Ericsson just announced plans to upgrade the Xperia X10 to Android 2.3, otherwise known as Gingerbread, by the end of the second quarter.

This is significant because the company had previously said it wasn’t going to update the phone beyond version 2.1. Now it will jump up two versions, leapfrogging over 2.2 and right to 2.3.

The X10 was Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone, and the beginning of the company’s swing away from Symbian and other proprietary operating systems. It also helpd bring the company back to a profitable position in the market.

With the announcement of the Xperia Play, the PlayStation Phone as some people are calling it, a lot more attention has come to Sony Ericsson.

Even though the X10 isn’t a PlayStation-certified phone, thanks to this announcement, it will be able to download the PlayStation Suite software later this year, an app to be made available for all Android 2.3+ devices that allows players to download classic PS One games and other games designed exclusively for the mobile PlayStation library.
