ARM 2GHz chip design has dual core legs

British chip design firm ARM said it has developed two Cortex-A9 implementations to take advantage of TSMC’s 40 nanometer process which will deliver clock speeds faster than 2GHz.

ARM’s implementation, it said, means system designs can build an industry standard ARM microprocessor with a low power envelope and aimed at both the consumer and enterprise markets.

The company says that it will deliver a peak performance of 4,000 DMIPS at less than 250mW per CPU.

The dual core Cortex-A9 hard macros share a seven power domain configuration which will support symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) operating systems with up to 8MB of level two cache memory.

The Cortex-A9 hard macros and the optimized physical IP are available for vendors to license today with deliveries in the fourth quarter of this year.
