Distinguishing quantum bits key to building large-scale computer

Researchers at the University of New South Wales have proposed a new method of distinguishing between quantum bits that are placed only a few nanometres apart in a silicon chip, taking them a step closer to the construction of a large-scale quantum computer.

By using light, researchers at UC Santa Barbara have managed to manipulate the quantum state of a single atomic-sized defect in diamond – the nitrogen-vacancy center – a method that allows for more unified control than conventional processes.
