Massive galaxy cluster verifies predictions of cosmological theory

By observing a high-speed component of a massive galaxy cluster, Caltech/JPL scientists and collaborators have detected for the first time in an individual object the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, a change in the cosmic microwave background caused by its interaction with massive moving objects.

A galaxy with two hearts

This new Hubble image shows the spiral galaxy Messier 83, otherwise known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy. One of the largest and closest barred spirals to us, this galaxy is dramatic and mysterious; it has hosted a large number of supernova explosions, and is thought to have a double nucleus lurking at its core.

Hubble eyes galaxy as flat as a pancake

Located some 25 million light-years away, this new Hubble image shows spiral galaxy ESO 373-8. Together with at least seven of its galactic neighbors, this galaxy is a member of the NGC 2997 group. We see it side-on as a thin, glittering streak across the sky, with all its contents neatly aligned in the same plane.

Our Galaxy takes its food in pills

The Galaxy has been making stars for the last 8 billion years. What’s kept it going all that time? When old stars die, some of their gas goes back into the galactic “soup” for star making. But in the long run a lot of it gets locked up in long-lived dwarf stars.

A Galaxy's ring of fire

How many rings do you see in this new image of the galaxy Messier 94 (below), also known as NGC 4736? While at first glance one might see a number of them, astronomers believe there is just one. This particular image was captured in infrared light by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.

This galaxy turns gas into stars

Astronomers have discovered a galaxy transforming gas into stars with almost 100 percent efficiency - a rare phase of galaxy evolution that is the most extreme yet observed.

Galactic geysers erupt halfway across the sky

Astronomers have discovered enormous outflows of charged particles from the centre of our galaxy, moving at supersonic speeds.

‘Green bean’ is new type of galaxy

Astronomers have classified a new type of galaxy after they noticed that it glowed an unusually bright green.

Hubble snaps galaxy in a spin

NASA astronomers describe NGC 3344 as a "glorious" spiral galaxy around half the size of the Milky Way, which lies some 25 million light-years distant.

Apple loses appeal over Samsung design

Apple's lost its appeal over a UK ruling that Samsung's Galaxy tablet doesn't infringe its registered design for the iPad - a decision that is valid in the whole of Europe.
