Bright star reveals new exoplanet

By studying the star around which the planet revolves, they found that the star's rotation appears to be well-aligned with the planetary movement. The object can be well-studied because the star is relatively bright, it can be seen if strong binoculars are used.

Astronomers image lowest-mass exoplanet around a sun-like star

Using infrared data from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, an international team of astronomers has imaged a giant planet around the bright star GJ 504. Several times the mass of Jupiter and similar in size, the new world, dubbed GJ 504b, is the lowest-mass planet ever detected around a star like the sun using direct imaging techniques.

UCSB astronomer uncovers the hidden identity of an exoplanet

Hovering about 70 light-years from Earth –– that's "next door" by astronomical standards –– is a star astronomers call HD 97658, which is almost bright enough to see with the naked eye.

ESA spots a light exoplanet

Although nearly a thousand exoplanets have been detected indirectly — most using the radial velocity or transit methods — and many more candidates await confirmation, only a dozen exoplanets have been directly imaged.

Moon-sized planet found orbiting sun-like star

NASA's Kepler mission has found the smallest planet yet around a star similar to our sun.

The seven planets that could support life

One year on the Habitable Exoplanet Catalog has identified seven exoplanets in our Milky Way that are similar to Earth.

The changing seasons of Saturn’s Titan moon

For the first time, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has recorded the effect of changing seasons on Saturn’s Earth-like moon Titan.

‘Super-Jupiter’ planet found orbiting massive star

Astrophysicists at the University of Toronto have discovered a new, huge exoplanet, 13 times bigger than Jupiter. It's in orbit round the massive star Kappa Andromedae, which is part of the constellation Andromeda.

‘Homeless’ planet discovered wandering through space

Astronomers have for the first time found  a  rogue planet that  appears to be wandering through space on its own, unattached to any star.

Small exoplanet may be covered in magma

Astronomers using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have discovered what may be the nearest world to our solar system that's smaller than Earth.

NASA's Hubble detects an "evaporating" exoplanet

An international team of astronomers have positively identified significant changes in the atmosphere of a planet located beyond our solar system.

A new way to learn about exoplanets

Astronomers have used a new technique to study the atmosphere of a 'hot Jupiter' exoplanet.

New-found exoplanet is evaporating away

MIT and NASA scientists believe they've found a planet, 1,500 light years away, that appears to be disintegrating from the heat of its parent star.

Life on 'habitable' exoplanet probably couldn't spread

Any life on the 'super-Earth' Gliese 581-d is unlikely to make it off the planet and onto others within its solar system.

Exoplanet is blacker than coal

Astronomers have discovered an exoplanet that's blacker than coal - a distant, Jupiter-sized gas giant known as TrES-2b that reflects less than one percent of the sunlight falling on it.

Exoplanet aurorae 'a thousand times' brighter than ours

Aurorae on many planets could make our own Northern and Southern lights look like a flickering candle, new research has shown.

New candidate for habitable exoplanet

Scientists from the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace in Paris say they've confirmed that the Gliese 581d exoplanet could support Earth-like life.

Planet is almost as dense as lead

Astronomers have discovered the densest rocky planet yet. Named 55 Cancri e, it's 60 per cent larger in diameter than Earth but eight times as massive - making it twice as dense as Earth, and almost as dense as lead.

Astronomers see birth of new exoplanet

Astronomers believe they have found a planet in the process of formation, clearing a path in the natal disc surrounding a young star.

Kepler finds smallest exoplanet yet

Astronomers have found the smallest planet yet outside our solar system, a rocky planet about one and a half times the size of Earth.
