Trees go high-tech: process turns cellulose into energy storage devices

Based on a fundamental chemical discovery by scientists at Oregon State University, it appears that trees may soon play a major role in making high-tech energy storage devices.

A one-pound boat that could float 1,000 pounds

By examining how water striders walk on water and how wood gets its lightness and great strength, researchers have created a material so buoyant that a boat made from one pound of the substance could carry  1,000 pounds.
