Al Gore backs Dot Eco LLC, seeks to create .eco domain
Chicago (IL) - While .COM, .NET and .ORG are the oldest top-level domains on the Internet, other more recent additions have included .GOV, .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME and .TV. A suggested porn-only .XXX domain was defeated back in 2007. And now Al Gore, the former vice-president, and his Alliance for Climate Protection, are both backing a group called Dot Eco LLC that would like to see .ECO added as an official domain for raising environmental awareness. Could we someday be visiting www.algore.eco?
The group has applied to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to have the extension .eco added as an official Internet domain. They made the announcement at ICANN's current meeting being held in Mexico City.
Dot Eco quotes Gore as saying, "We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application process and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco. This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the Internet as a whole."
Dot Eco said "[.ECO] will be established for individuals to express their support for environmental causes, for companies to promote their environmental initiatives, and for environmental organisations to maintain their websites in a namespace that is more relevant to their core missions."
They state that proceeds from .eco registration fees would be used to fund research on climate change and other environmentally related areas.
