Amazon launches Kindle for the Mac, promises iPad version soon

Amazon has finally launched Kindle for the Mac, filling a rather noticeable gap in the list of supported devices, and is promising a proper version for the iPad soon.

The app is still in beta, though, and currently doesn't support full text search, highlighting or creating and editing of notes. Amazon's promising to add these features sometime in the near future.

Like the other Kindle products, the Mac version uses the company's Whispersynch technology to synchronise bookmarks and 'last page read' across devices.

"Kindle for Mac is the perfect companion application for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX," said Jay Marine, director of Amazon Kindle.

"For those customers around the world who don't yet have a Kindle, Kindle for Mac is a great way to instantly access and read the most popular new releases as well as their old favorites."

Amazon is also promising a version of Kindle for the iPad 'soon', although the device does already come with Apple's own e-reader.

Like the PC version, the Mac app can be downloaded free. It's available here.  It requires Mac OS X10.5 or later.
