Online payments come to Facebook

A new application lets Facebook users make small payments to each other, to charities and to businesses.

Created by online payment company ClickandBuy, users of Buxter can load their account with dollars or Euros, up to a limit of €50. There's a conversion fee for other currencies.

Users can transfer, receive and request money from other Facebook users free of charge, or - for a 1.9 percent fee - withdraw their money from their ClickandBuy account or pay it to a non-Facebook user.

The company suggests it can be used to buy low-cost items such as movie tickets or cups of coffee, lend money to friends or raise funds for charity.

Charles Fraenkl, CEO of ClickandBuy says: "Buxter is the application that will see Facebook members use the platform not just as a way to stay in touch but also as a fast, easy and secure way to exchange money or buy and sell products and services."

The company's opening up the API to developers. The application is here.
