IE8 takes top spot in browser ratings

Google's Chrome has pushed Apple's Safari into fourth place in the overall browser rankings for December.

According to net monitoring outfit Net Applications, Microsoft IE8 has finally overtaken wrinkly old IE6 as the world's most widely-used browser.

December figures show that while IE6 still boasts 20.99 percent, with IE8 close behind at 20.86 percent, a further 2.8 percent are using IE8 in compatibility mode, nudging it into the top slot.

Firefox 3.5 follows in third place on 16.32 percent ahead of IE7 on 15.5 percent.

In the overall ratings, Internet Explorer has 62.69 percent, Firefox 24.61 percent, while Chrome on 4.63 percent has pushed Apple's Safari down to fourth slot on 4.46 percent.

And in good news for all those who have had to suffer it, Lotus Notes now boasts an impressive 0.00 percent market share.

Funny, it took people this long to trust IE>6 over IE6... I avoid it (6 AND 8) like the plague and have been using Firefox, but lately FF just seems to get slower and slower and eat more and more memory.. yeah yeah I run about 25
extensions, but still... now I am using Chrome more and more since I only need about 3 extensions in there and that way I keep it fast and light.

How about IE8 in 64 bit mode on Win 7? Awesome! Adobe might actually have a Flash 64 bit player for IE by the time ..... oh, heck, never. Shame.

Who cares who has the largest market share? What counts is that no single browser is so dominant that websites only work with that browser. IE is down to 62% and still falling. That is good. It matters not about the others as long as
they grow to be more than 50%--collectively--of the market.
