Mountain View (CA) – Google’s email service Gmail received a direct connection to other online productivity services, including links to Docs and Calendar.

While the latest additions are only experimental features at this time, they are less funky than the recently released “Goggles” and “Canned Responses” add-ons and show that Gmail is evolving from a simple webmail service to become part of an integrated office package.

Links to the most recent documents and calendar events, as well as options to create new documents and events are now listed in the left navigation pane below the Chat and Labels section.

While the page layout is much less sophisticated that, for example, Microsoft Outlook, the addition of Docs and Calendar were somewhat obvious and may make the software much more useful to those who whose the company’s cloud services on a regular basis.

Gmail users have to manually enable the Docs and Calendar integration. In Gmail, click on the “Settings” tab, choose the “Labs” options. Docs and Calendar for Gmail can be found at the second and third position from the bottom.
