Microsoft said that Windows for Workgroups 3.11 will officially be gone by November 1, 2008 and not longer be available in the embedded channel via OEM licenses.

Windows 3.11, which was offered by Microsoft as a boxed version as well as free upgrade to Windows 3.1, was released In December 1993 and was replaced by Windows 95 in August 1995. Microsoft blogger John Coyne noted that Windows 3.11 has not been available for some time now (in fact, all Windows 3.11 support was canceled after December 31, 2001), but embedded versions of software tend to live a bit longer – a lot longer in this case – than desktop versions.

Coyne notes that it is “finally the end of an era.”
