Redmond (WA) – Microsoft’s latest service pack for Windows XP is causing some headaches for AMD-powered HP machines. Service Pack 3 was recently released to Windows Update and some HP owners are experiencing unrelenting rebooting of their machines.
Jesper Johansson, a Microsoft MVP and blogger at MSinfulentials.com, says the problem can be traced to HP’s installation practices. He says the company installed the same OEM image of Windows XP onto both AMD and Intel-powered computers. The image contains a power management driver, intelppm.sys, which as you can imagine doesn’t play nice with AMD processors.
However all is not lost for those users and Johansson gives a couple good troubleshooting tips and solutions.
