Chicago (IL) - If you are among the first buyers of the Android G1 handset, you probably already know that it is a lousy iPod, mostly due to its limited default storage capacity and the lack of a regular headphone jack. However, there is a new free application released earlier today on the Android Market that improves the music experience on the handset and offers free music streaming and social-network based music discovery features.

Imeem announced a new free social music application for the Android platform, which will take off tomorrow with T-Mobile's G1 smartphone. Just like Pandora for the iPhone, Imeem for Android provides access to streaming music and personalized radio free of charge. It is a cross-platform solution that seamlessly integrates with features on imeem.com, meaning that the application will send information about your listening habits to the website; this data will be taken into account when music is recommended to other members.
"Imeem has created the first cross-platform social music experience," said Imeem's founder and CEO Dalton Caldwell. "Our vision is to let our community enjoy Imeem anywhere on the Web and beyond."
The service is based on ad-supported streaming of music and video content that is obtained legally from all four major music labels and thousands of independent labels, in addition to social networking tools that allow users to discover new music, upload and share their music, video and photos. The website claims to attract 25 million unique visitors and an additional 85 million through widgets.
Imeem for Android connects to an existing user account to enable personalized stations based on a user’s taste, in addition to common options like bookmarking new artists, becoming a fan of an artist, which automatically creates a station with music from that artist, and accessing a logged mobile listening history at Imeem.com.
The application includes a number of preset stations that are streamed over the Internet and updated live according to listening patterns of the Imeem community. For instance, there are stations with the most popular songs and emerging artists across the service, personalized recommendations based on what you and friends are listening to, and dynamically created stations based on artists a user is a fan of.
You can download Imeem for Android free of charge on Google’s Android Market.
