Sprint offers social mapping on mobile phones
Mountain View (CA) – Sprint has partnered up with Mountain View-based Loopt to offer friend tracking services on upcoming GPS-equipped phones. Subscribers to the $2.99 a month service can see the locations of their friends on a graphical map. They can even be alerted when a friend is nearby.
“loopt even sends an alert when a friend is near, putting an end to missed connections in the mall, at the movies or around town,” Sprint said in a press release.
The “victim” must also be signed up to the service and own a GPS-enabled phone. Subscribers can always turn off the service temporarily and stay private.
Sprint says loopt will be available on more than 25 Sprint and Nextel phones in the coming weeks.
