Samsung’s Exynos 5420 octa-core chip boasts major performance boost

Samsung has debuted a new octa-core chip. Dubbed the Exynos 5420, the processor is built around four ARM Cortex-A15 processor cores and four lower-power Cortex-A7 cores used for tasks that don’t require huge amounts of CPU horsepower.

As previously discussed on TG Daily, ARM’s load-balancing big.LITTLE architecture is designed to help extend the battery life of mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.

The latest iteration of the Exynos chip also features ARM Mali graphics instead of Imagination’s PowerVR graphics. Meaning, users should notice a 20 percent increase in terms of performance, along with twice the 3D graphics performance of the Exynos 5410.

A breakdown of key specs include:

  • 4 ARM Cortex-A15 cores with clock speeds up to 1.8 GHz
  • 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores with clock speeds up to 1.3 GHz
  • ARM Mali-T628 MP6 6-core graphics
  • 2 x 32-bit LPDDR3-1866 memory
