Report: Google prepping Nexus 7 tablet with 3G

Google introduced its indigenously designed Nexus 7 this past June.

The device which – runs Jelly Bean – is currently one of the most popular Android tablets on the market. However, the Nexus 7 only supports WiFi and does not offer 3G or 4G connectivity options.

This may be about to change, as a new report from MoDaCo claims Asus and Mountain View are preparing a 3G version of the tablet that will support 3G.

Although Google and Asus have yet to confirm the existence of such a tablet, MoDaCo’s Paul O’Brien says the 3G-enabled device is set to launch in “around six weeks,” with production already ramping.

As we’ve previously discussed, the Nexus 7 boasts some pretty sweet hardware specs indeed, such as a quad-core Nvidia Tegra processor, 1.2-megapixel front camera, NFC capabilities and a 1280 x 800, back-lit IPS LCD display.

The device is also priced quite competitively, with the 8GB model retailing for $200 and the 16GB going for a cool $250.

Frankly, I think the above-mentioned report about a 3G-enabled Nexus 7 makes perfect sense, especially with Amazon poised to refresh its Kindle Fire lineup in just a few days.

Indeed, it probably is safe to speculate that at least one of Amazon’s new tablets will likely offer 3G connectivity options and Google likely wants to compete on the same wireless playing field.
