Apple eyes uber-micro SIM cards

Apple is reportedly eyeing the adoption of uber-micro SIM cards which would allow Cupertino to design even thinner iPhones and iPads.

According to Anne Bouverot, Orange's head of mobile services, Apple has already submitted a new requirement to the European telecoms standards body (ETSI) for a smaller SIM form factor.

"They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them," Bouverot told Reuters.

However, the Orange exec noted the process would take some time to complete.

To be sure, the first devices with the next-gen sim cards aren’t likely to hit the streets before 2012.

As AppleInsider’s Katie Marsal points out, micro-SIM cards were first adopted by Cupertino for use in the company’s iPhone 4 and iPad tablets.

As expected, the proposed uber-micro SIM cards are significantly smaller than the model used in Apple’s current mobile lineup.
