Nokia's N8 ship date slides back

Nokia's warning customers that the N8 - launched only last week - will ship later than expected.

The company had been saying that it expected to start getting the phone to customers by the end of this month - but now reckons it may take a couple of weeks longer.

"We have received a record number of online pre-orders for the Nokia N8. We had targeted our online pre-order customers to receive their N8s by the end of September," says the company.

"As it can take time from the beginning of shipment to arriving at their doorstep, in full transparency, we have advised our pre-order customers that they should expect their new Nokia N8 in October."

The reason, says the company, is that it needs to make a few tweaks - believed to relate to the software, although the company doesn't specify exactly what. "To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends," it says.

The N8 is a flagship product for Nokia, as it's the first smartphone from the company to come with the new Symbian^3 operating system - the comnpany's last hope at seeing off the threat from Google and Apple, which dominate the market with Android and iOS.

The delay is announced as new chief executive Stephen Elop settles in at his desk - so not a great first day in the job. Indeed, the company's shares fell sharply at the news of the delay. The phone was originally expected in June, and any further delays could hamper the company's holiday sales.
