Intel moves Centrino to back burner - report
A report on Taiwanese wire Digitimes claimed that next year Intel will put an end to the Centrino brand.
The Centrino captured a large slice of the market because it incorporated a CPU, chipset and wireless chips but Digitimes says that's going to stop.
Instead, Intel will concentrate on the CPU under the Core brand, and Digitimes believes that means that the third party wireless market will get a boost.
Notebook manufacturers will, claims the report, be able to shop around for wireless products from other vendors such as Marvell, Atheros and others.
Centrino, instead, will become a marker for Intel's own wi-fi and WiMAX products says the report, here.
Intel could not be contacted at press time to comment on the report.
