Samsung working on Galaxy equivalent of iPhone 4S?

Samsung will not debut the Galaxy S III at this month’s anticipated Mobile World Congress, so what will it debut?

All signs point to the “Galaxy S II Plus,” a phone that has suddenly appeared on the app An3DBenchXL, a benchmarking database that lets users see how all the smartphones stack up against one another.

The Galaxy S II Plus appears to have been entered into the app’s database by Samsung itself. If true, this would be taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, as the company has a growing history of releasing incremental phone upgrades before actually raising the number (e.g., before the iPhone 4 there was the iPhone 3GS and before the iPhone 5 there was the iPhone 4S).

According to the app, the S II Plus has a CPU speed of 1.5 GHz and is powered by Android 2.3.4, the latest version of Gingerbread. Perhaps this device will be shown at the Mobile World Congress later this month.

The “Galaxy S” moniker from Samsung has come to represent the finest that the company has to offer in the mobile space. The Galaxy S II gained nearly universal praise and is leading many to question what could be next.

If Samsung keeps a hole on the Galaxy S II name for a bit longer, it could pay off.
