AT&T iPhone drops 2x more calls than Verizon iPhone

Anyone who thinks AT&T's iPhone doesn't drop calls should look at these numbers.

A study from ChangeWave looked at data concerning dropped calls on AT&T iPhones versus Verizon iPhones, and found some staggering results. Now that the Verizon iPhone is up and running at full capacity, let's see what the numbers showed:

In the study, which surveyed 4,068 iPhone 4 owners, 4.6% of those on AT&T reported having dropped calls, while a much smaller 1.4% of Verizon customers said it was an issue.

Apple came under a lot of heat when the iPhone 4 launched last year, after several customers noticed they lost a signal simply by holding the device. Instead of apologizing or offering solutions, Apple made grandstanding remarks about how it was the consumers' fault for holding it the wrong way. Only after several weeks of bad publicity did the company offer a solution. But it still claimed nothing was wrong with the phone, though in that same presentation Steve Jobs confirmed there were more dropped calls on iPhone 4 than any previous iPhone.

The issue wasn't fully addressed in the Verizon remodeling, but there do seem to be some tweaks. On top of that, Verizon has for years ranked above AT&T when it comes to call fidelity and signal strength.

The survey also took a group of non-iPhone-owners and asked which version they would be more likely to purchase. 46% said Verizon, while only 27% said AT&T. The remaining respondents were unsure or waiting for another carrier.

"Verizon is still in the very early stages of its iPhone 4 offering to consumers. It remains to be seen how well the Verizon network performs as the number of Verizon iPhone 4 owners ramps up and inevitably puts more pressure on their system," said ChangeWave.
