Rumored Droid Pro phone may just be repackaged Droid 2

As the collection of phones with the "Droid" name continues to run amok, there are new details that a rumored phone called the Droid Pro may just actually be the name of the Droid 2 when it gets a GSM antenna.

Engadget is reporting this morning that it has an exclusive tipster saying the Droid Pro is not another device to add to the family of Droid, Droid Incredible, Droid X, Droid Mini, and Droid 2. It is instead just a Droid 2 without a CDMA receiver and instead using the more global GSM standard.

Verizon relies on CDMA for most of its service, which is a proprietary standard in the US and will not work if users try to make a call from other parts of the world. That has been one of the biggest hurdles for Verizon, as well as fellow CDMA provider Sprint. Verizon does have a very limited number of devices that run on GSM.

It wouldn't be unusual for Motorola to call a nearly identical phone something different just to separate it. In Europe, the first Droid was known as the Milestone. The Droid 2 and the Droid Pro both have different model numbers, but Engadget says their feature sets are identical.

If the rumors are to be believed, the Droid Pro will be officially revealed in a few weeks so we'll get to see the answers to these burning questions before too long.

The Droid 2 has been somewhat muted since its launch earlier this month. It didn't make nearly as much waves as the bigger, more interesting Droid X but it is expected to still sell very well considering it officially takes the slot of the original Droid in Verizon stores across the country.
