AMD has announced the immediate availability of its 6 core Istanbul processor.

According to Rick Bergman, Istanbul offers superior performance and ensures efficient energy consumption. In addition, Bergman noted that the company would be introducing an all AMD server platform sometime in the near future.  

Dirk Meyer claimed that Istanbul was a "stunning" product - which was made possible by the efforts of AMD and its spun-off manufacturing arm Global Foundries. The company said that Istanbul is available five months ahead of schedule.

Leslie Sobon expressed similar sentiments. According to Sobon, Istanbul was an appropriate choice to handle applications that had become "more dense" and required decreased latency and multi-threading.

Indeed, Sobon emphasised that Istanbul was designed specifically for virtualization, cloud computing and large databse applications.  

Finally, Sobon noted that Istanbul (built with AMD-V and AMD-P) was the only six-core processor that was available for 2p, 4p and 8p configurations.
