The Wandboard goes quad-core

  • The Wandboard can best be described as a small dev board equipped with a speedy Freescale i.MX6 ARM Cortex-A9 processor.

Previously, the board was only available with single or dual-core chips, although Wandboard is now offering a quad-core option.

The new quad-core iteration also boasts 2GB of RAM, two microSD card slots, HDMI and USB ports, Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth. The high-end Wandboard Quad is priced at $129, while the single and dual-core models will cost you $79 and $99, respectively.

Is it worth the extra cash? Well, the Wandboard Quad have offers more processor cores than the cheaper models, along with additional memory and a SATA connector for a traditional HDD or solid state disk (SSD).

It should probably also be noted that all of the above-mentioned Wandboards support Google's wildly popular Android OS, along with Ubuntu as well as other Linux flavors.

Wandboard expects to start shipping the new quad-core boards (sans cases) in June which are targeted at devs, hackers and the DIY crowd.
