The talented devs over at XDA have managed to overclock a quad-core Google Nexus 7 tablet to a screaming 2.0 GHz using a specially coded "Elite Kernel."
Powered by Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 processor, the tablet was overclocked to a sweet 1.7 GHz earlier this month, easily passing 7000 in Quadrant benchmarks.
However, as Cory Gunther of Android Community points out, the latest overclock brings an entirely new level of speed to the tablet, topping a cool 8,000 in Quadrant benchmarks.
"This time around however we aren't running on the popular Trinity (derkenel) many know and love. Instead this awesome news comes to us thanks to my good pal Simms22, and Clemsyn at XDA Developers," wrote Gunther.
"Clemsyn's very special and experimental test kernel (as in not for the public) has managed to push the limits to 2.0 Ghz on this quad-core chip."
Gunther also pointed out that while many users are currently enjoying Clemsyn's overclock at 1.8 GHz, 2.0 is causing a "few issues," thus limiting the record breaking speed to internal builds.
"2.0 GHz isn't exactly what we'd call 'stable' but [Simms] was able to get a few other tests in — including the new and popular RL Benchmark," added Gunther.
So if you're the sort of super user who likes to apply custom software, tweak kernels and overclock, you may want to check out the specially modded Elite Kernel. This slick kernel is based on the Motley kernel developed by an XDA member known as " _motley," and later modded into the Elite version by Clemsyn.
The revamped kernel features a number of different tweaks and modifications to squeeze even more performance out of the Nexus 7 tablet hardware (at a stable 1.7 GHz), such as:
1. The implementation of JRCU.
2. Lowest backlight setting set to 5.
3. Core voltage increased from 1200 to 1250mv on the high side to hit 1.7 frequency and 600 GPU but decreased from 950 to 900mv on the low side.
4. Increased CPU voltage to 1240mv for 1.7 frequency but allows decreased 750mv in low side.
5. Increased GPU clock to 600 and pixclock increased.
6. DVFS core table completely changed to allow max clock of host1x and pll_c and hit most max frequencies.
7. Enable Thermal_Sys to throttle at 68.
As TG Dailypreviously reported, not all Nexus 7 tablets out there will be able to handle the optimized tweaks offered in the Elite kernel. However, if your tablet is up to the task, you will likely see performance increase significantly, especially with resource intensive games and applications.
