TI ARM SoC hits 1.5GHz per core
Texas Instruments (TI) is firing up an ARM-based, dual-core processor that clocks in at a blazing 1.5GHz - per core.
The OMAP4440 chip features two Cortex-A9 MPCores, which boast a 1.25x increase in graphics performance, a 30 percent decrease in webpage load time and a 2x increase in 1080p video playback performance.
As expected, the next-gen SoC also offers support for 1080p stereoscopic 3D, 1080p video conferencing, gesture recognition and two 12 megapixel cameras working in parallel.
So, when can you get your hands on a device, say a smartphone or tablet, with one of these hot chips?
Well, Texas Instruments says sample quantities of the OMAP4440 will ship in the first half of 2011, with full production beginning during the second half of the year.
So, it seems likely that the first devices loaded with the dual-core, 1.5GHz chip can be expected to hit the marketplace in early 2012 - or if we’re really lucky, in late 2011.
Either way, ARM-based processors like TI’s OMAP4440 herald a powerful new generation of mobile devices capable of streaming video without hiccups and (true) multitasking without lag or drag.
