Report: Microsoft Kinect pwned and owned

  • A talented modder by the name of AlexP has reportedly managed to hack, pwn and own Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect.

"As a pure research project, I took on getting this awesome device to work on Windows," AlexP wrote in an NuiGroup forum post.

"[These] are the first tests of controlling the Kinect NUI Motor and reading the Accelerometer data from a PC. [The] outlook looks good for other sensors (i.e., cameras and microphones) of the device."

If proved legitimate, the hack would allow AlexP to collect a sweet $2,000 bounty from Adafruit.

Unsurprisingly, Redmond remains staunchly opposed to any form of Kinect hacking or modding.

"Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products," a company spokesperson told CNET last week.

"With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering.

"[And we] will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant."
