Lo-fi speakers, for the pet that has everything
Apparently, dogs and cats don't like the same hifi systems as us. You might think 'sod 'em', and play your music anyway; you might, if you're particularly soft-hearted, buy them some teeny tiny earmuffs.
But that's not enough, according to Pet Acoustics: if you really, really love little Fido you should be buying him his own $250 speakers.
My Pet Speaker transforms your personal music library into pet-friendly tunes that soothe and relax your pet, says the company, which already offers a similar iPhone application.
It's all terribly scientific, of course. Apparently the thing features "an omni-directional speaker with a 4-inch drive unit and cone reflector which disburses the music in 360 degrees, recreating how animals hear in nature". Not quite sure how that differs from us, but there you are.
By producing limited frequencies and fiddling about with the bass, you'll get a sound that you may hate, but your cat will love.
Pet Acoustics founder and (God help us) composer Janet Marlow gushes: "With the overwhelming success and response to the Pet Acoustics application, we are so thrilled to provide this amazing tool that uses all music to create pet-friendly environments for pets everywhere.
"My Pet Speaker is ideal for pets at home, veterinary clinics, barns, pet care facilities, and is currently being used in horse stables to elicit relaxation by modifying frequencies that agitate equine hearing."
