Seagate 2TB Barracuda drive features 64MB cache
San Francisco, Calif. Seagate has introduced a 2 terabyte hard disk drive with a 64MB cache. The Barracuda XT - which features a 6GB/s SATA interface - is targeted at high-end gamers and multimedia developers.
"Unlike other 2-TB [models] that run at 5400 or 5900-RPM speeds, the new Barracuda XT drive is built on a full-speed, 7200-RPM, 4-disk platform," Seagate spokesperson David Burks told TG Daily. "Further turbocharged with a huge 64-MB cache and the industry's new, high-performance SATA 6Gb/s interface, the Barracuda XT drive is destined to set a new standard for high-speed desktop performance."
Burks explained that Seagate had increased the XT's cache from 32MB to 64MB to exploit the newly designed SATA 6G interface.
"The XT's 64MB cache optimizes burst performance and reduces data throughput bottlenecks," said Burks. "So, cache-efficient games and applications, such as non-linear video editing tools, will experience a real performance boost right out of the chute."
Burks also noted that Seagate had worked closely with a number of companies, including Intel, Microsoft, Asus and Marvell, to ensure the success of Sata 6G.
The Barracuda XT - which is fully compatible with legacy SATA 1.5Gb/s and SATA 3Gb/s - is currently available for $300.
