Scotts Valley (CA) - Seagate is introducing some new enterprise storage solution hard drives for those who work with Tier 2 nearline storage applications. These new Constellation hard drives are said by the company to be the first serial attached SCSI (SAS) 2.0 nearline drives.

The new Constellation 2.5-inch hard drives, said Seagate, will be available in 160GB and 500GB options with both 3Gbps SATA and the new 6GB/s SAS 2.0 interface. This new SAS 2.0 interface is said to allow for larger external storage topologies, 100% faster data throughput and higher signal strength over greater distances.

Also available will be 3.5-inch Constellation ES hard drives in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options. These will also offer SATA and SAS interfaces. Seagate says this particular models are currently the world's only 7200-rpm 3.5-inch hard drive providing up to 2TB of storage.

Of minor note on these new drives are enhanced power savings technology as well as tougher security features like optional self-encrypting drive (SED) technology. The more basic Constellation drives will be available this quarter, while the ES models should be shipping by the third quarter.

In other Seagate news, recently reported problems have surfaced with their consumer 7200.11 Barracuda and DiamondMax 22 brand hard drives. An unusually high number of drive failures has been reported, causing Seagate to institute a free data recovery policy for early adopters of the 500GB, 750GB and 1TB drive models. Seagate has also issued a firmware patch which fixes the problem for consumers who own those drives but aren’t yet affected.
