Irvine (CA) – Storage capacities in cars could soon see a boost with the first 80 GB hard drive arriving these days.
Toshiba’s new “automotive-grade” HDD line is shipping in 40 GB and 80 GB versions, up from 20 GB and 30 GB models common in certain cars today. According to the manufacturer, the new sixth-generation drives also get a new altitude specification, which has been bumped to 5500 m (about 18,000 ft).
So, what can you do with 80 GB available in the dash of your car? Besides the navigation data which these systems are likely to hold, you could store about 20,000 music tracks, close to 100 hours of (standard definition) video or about 23,000 6-megapixel pictures on them.
In addition to defining the standard for automotive- storage systems, Toshiba says its automotive HDDs also are finding their way into other ruggedized applications, such as surveillance systems, remote computing platforms, equipment control applications and other industrial computing devices. The company claims that it has shipped more than seven million of these drives so far.
