Sunnyvale (CA) – Following on the heels of the introduction of the quad-core Opteron processor "Barcelona", AMD has released the logo of the Phenom quad- and dual-core processor.
Based on Barcelona, Phenom is expected to be available in December. The processor will be available in "X2" dual-core (code-named "Kuma", "Stars" core) and "X4" quad-core (code-named "Agena", "Stars" core) variants. The X2 versions are expected to scale from 2.0 to 2.4 GHz at launch, with Q1 models to reach 2.8 GHz. X4 processors will be clocked slightly lower, between 2 and 2.4 GHz.
AMD will keep its FX brand of enthusiasts processors and apparently plans to introduce these high-end desktop processors with clock speeds of up to 2.6 GHz in Q1 2008.
The name Phenom has been created from the word "phenomenal", AMD representatives told TG Daily.
