United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has followed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to announce that it is also developing 18" (450 mm) wafer production. Company CEO Shih-Wei Sun said that R&D cannot stop just because the economy is weak.
