AMD on track to introduce 32 nm chips in 2010

During its 2008 Financial Analyst Day, AMD chief executive officer Dirk Meyer confirmed that 32 nm chip designs are being “finalized” and prepared for a 2010 introduction. Meyer did not say when in 2010 that will be the case. So it remains unclear whether the company will be able to close the manufacturing technology gap with Intel, which plans on introducing 32 nm processors in late 2009.

AMD today introduced its 45 nm processor, the quad-core Opteron CPU code-named “Shanghai”, which is about one year behind Intel and about five to six months behind AMD’s initial 45 nm schedule.

Meyer noted that 40 nm ATI Radeon GPUs “are just around the corner” and set for a mid-2009 refresh for the firm’s current graphics product line.
