DRAM makers are rebounding in the third quarter of 2007 from the lows of the first and second quarters. At the same time, Taiwan's major players ProMOS Technologies, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), Inotera Memories and Nanya Technology have all raised their 2007 capital expenditure (capex) to a total of $7.41 billion, up 20% from their previous total. Most of the capex will be devoted to a production migration to 70nm process technologies. This leap to 70nm process manufacturing should be watched carefully, as it was only last year that DRAM makers were still struggling with yield issues on 90nm process production.
